The Lough Avalla Farm Loop is an inspiring hike open to the public in the heart of Burren, Co. Clare. Here is everything you need to know about the Lough Avally Farm Loop.
The Owner
Harry Jeuken felt a longing to move to Ireland when he was a young man. Having grown up in Holland, a relatively new country, he had a fascination with Ireland, where the history dates back as far as the Celtic era (1200 BC). Harry is a traditional farmer and wanted to live in an area where he could see the past and be in tune with nature. He chose the Burren.
The Hiking Trail
In 2011, Harry opened his farm to the public. He created a trail that brings visitors through diverse, inspiring landscapes from woodland to barren rocky terrain. The trail is 6km and will take approx 2 – 2.5 hours. It is by far one of the best hikes in the Burren.
The hike begins when you park your car at the Gortlecka Crossroads, roughly 20 mins from Ennis and 30 mins from the Cliffs of Moher. You can follow the trail by looking out for these purple signs. Please note that sometimes, these purple signs can be difficult to spot in the wide-open rocky terrain. Keep your eyes peeled!
The terrain includes narrow farm roads, woodland, and open rocky pavement.
Please note: The trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or anyone with mobility issues.
As you reach the high points on the trails, you will be treated with breathtaking views of a landscape formed over 350 million years ago, particularly of Mullaghmore – County Clare’s 180m-high limestone hill. You will also experience open pastures with grazing animals such as cows, goats, and sheep.
PS: do not be one bit surprised if you come across a fairy!
What is The Lough Avalla Tea House
After the hike, visitors are welcome to make their way to the tea house which is signposted near the end of the hike. Here, you will be treated to some tea/coffee, homemade brownies, and apple pie with fresh cream! There are no prices at the tea house. Visitors have the opportunity to make a donation afterward if they please.
