If you’re planning to experience the stunning views along the Cliffs of Moher, you may have heard that parts of the coastal walk are temporarily closed. Here’s what you need to know to plan a safe and memorable visit.

Why Are Parts of the Cliffs of Moher Closed?

The Cliffs of Moher trail is undergoing essential upgrades to enhance safety and accessibility for all visitors. After a recent review, two sections of the trail were identified for improvements, ensuring that hikers can continue to experience these breathtaking views with peace of mind.

What Parts of the Cliffs of Moher are Closed?

The entire 5km stretch on the south side of the Cliffs of Moher, locally known as Hags Head is entirely closed.

A 500m-meter section is closed on the north side.

What Do the Trail Closures Mean for Hikers?

The current closures impact two key areas:

  1. Visitor Center Access: People starting at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Center cannot access the Cliffs of Moher coastal trail from that point.
  2. Hikers from Doolin: For those beginning the trail in Doolin, the path now ends about 500 meters before the Visitor Center. Without a guide, hikers are required to turn back and retrace their steps, adding an extra 7km back to Doolin.

When will the Cliffs of Moher trail be fully reopened?

The Cliffs of Moher Coastal trail is likely to start reopening in stages in early 2025. The 500-meter section on the north side of the trail will be the first to be reopened. The south side (Hags Head hike) will be a slower process and will be closed for most of 2025.
